Blundering wanted man traced by cops after commenting on his own police appeal

A wanted man has been captured after he commented on his own social media appeal put out by police .

Brett Painter 25, was wanted for failing to appear at Hull Magistrates’ Court in connection with an assault. An appeal was subsequently issued by Humberside Police.

Just before the Easter weekend, Painter made social media posts on the force's appeal. His comments helped police trace him to a house in Leeds, reports Hull Daily Mail .

A spokesman for Humberside Police said: “A man wanted on warrant for failing to appear in court has been arrested and sentenced as a direct result of a social media post.

“Brett Painter, 25, formerly of Hessle Road, was due to appear at Hull Magistrates' Court in connection with an assault.

“He was traced to Leeds in West Yorkshire and arrested just before the weekend.

“He had been posting on social media on his own wanted appeal which helped us to find him.

“He’s now been sentenced to a 12 month community order and must complete 120 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £300 in costs and was instructed to pay £75 compensation.”
