Blundering DWP kept writing letters to cancer patient who died three months ago

Negligent bosses at the Department for Work and Pensions repeatedly sent a cancer patient letters about returning to work - even though he had died months earlier.

Tam Glen, 62, lost his battle with oesophageal cancer in April.

But the DWP has since written the grandfather multiple letters detailing his taxable earnings.

Tam's son Thomas has blasted the pension bosses.

"I've explained this to them five or six times now, yet the letters have continued. It's very distressing," he said.

"The letters were telling him about his taxable earnings since his death.

"It's utter negligence that this has happened. What has been the worst thing is the number of times I've contacted them about the error."

The joiner, pictured with Thomas as a baby, was well known in Dundee’s football community (cascadenews.co.uk)

Tam, who was a joiner in Dundee, Scotland, was diagnosed with the cancer in November last year.

His family informed the DWP of this weeks later.

But Thomas, of Dundee, said: "We've been sent more letters from the DWP addressed to my dad.

"The day after my father passed away, I contacted them to say he had died."

The DWP has apologised for the latest blunder.

It attributed the error to a "technical glitch."

Its statement read: "We apologise sincerely to Mr Glen's family at this difficult time.

Tam also had a daughter, who is pictured as a girl (cascadenews.co.uk)

"A technical glitch resulted in this update letter being sent and we have ensured that this will not happen again."

Tam's health deteriorated rapidly this year.

The joiner had oesophageal cancer, which primarily affects the throat and the gullet - the long tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach.

The cancer, which is more common in men, causes difficulty in swallowing, persistent indigestion or heartburn and a loss of appetite.
