This is the devastating aftermath after blundering engineers looked on in horror as a giant bridge toppled to the ground last night.
The 160-ton structure crushed a works van like a matchstick - but amazingly nobody was hurt in the astonishing howler.
Civil engineers responsible for the project have refused to say if the vehicle - a Volkswagen Caddy van - was being driven at the time.
Now serious safety questions are being asked as it emerged the failure of the operation will damage progress at Renfrewshire’s key investment area.
The 100-metre long metal bridge for cyclists and pedestrains should have been put in place over the Black Cart near Renfrew.
Instead it lies stricken on its side, possibly buckled, as it tipped off the edge of two heavy transport bogies.
People heard a “loud crash” as the bridge hit disaster in the dark at 8.30pm.
The structure was due to be lifted in place over the river by two cranes as a key part of a £21 million infrastructure project being run by Renfrewshire Council.
Devastated Council Leader Iain Nicolson said that “thankfully no one was injured.”
He revealed: “This is a significant set back which will delay this aspect of the ongoing development of the Glasgow Airport Investment area."
Civil engineering contractors Wills Bros won the tender for the work - but yesterday they refused to say what went wrong.
A spokeswoman would only say: “We can confirm there was no injury to any personnel.
“An incident investigation is now underway.”
