Bluff Knoll hike trail to reopen after bushfire

Construction is nearly complete on the fire-damaged Bluff Knoll hike trail.

The hike up Western Australia's renowned Bluff Knoll will soon be easier and more family friendly with the construction of a new trail, including a bridge.

The popular track had been left all but destroyed after bushfires wiped out about half of the Stirling Range National Park between Christmas and the new year.

Work to repair the damaged 3-kilometre track has been ticking along at a gruelling pace of just 20 metres a day since then.

Helicopters have made almost fortnightly flights, ferrying tools and materials up the mountains.

Peter Hartley, the Department of Biodiversity and Attractions Albany manager, estimated it to be open to the public in a month's time.

"It's been a long process.

"It's hard labour intensive work, using hand tools, at the moment production is about 20 metres a day, and the track is 3 kilometres long."

The track's damage has had a silver lining however as it has provided Parks and Wildlife with the opportunity to make it more family friendly.

"We've increased the number of steps so the steps were a lot lower to step up and realigned some of the areas that were going through areas that are ecologically sensitive so we have done little realignments here and there," Mr Hartley said.

The new track will also include a 5-metre walk bridge over a previously narrow and slippery section to improve drainage and safety.

The estimated cost of recovery to the track was about $200,000 from a combination of State Government and Australian Heritage Grant money.

Public access tracks up Mt Toolbrunup, Mount Trio and Mount Hassell, which were also fire damaged, are also being repaired and upgraded with all expected to be opened within the next few weeks.
