Blues shut out for second in four games, fall to Jets, 4-0

WINNIPEG, Manitoba _ The Blues' offensive problems continued on Sunday as they were shut out for the second time in four games, being blanked 4-0 by Winnipeg in the second half of their back-to-back Central Division showdown on Sunday at Bell MTS Place.

The teams split their weekend games, with the Blues winning 2-0 on Saturday.

The Blues were shut out by Tampa Bay on Tuesday, then scored one goal in a loss to Anaheim and two in a win over Winnipeg at Scottrade Center on Saturday. (They are off until Wednesday when their four-game Canada swing continues in Calgary.) The Blues have been one of the best teams in the league in five-on-five, but they have just one five-on-five goal in those four games. The Blues have been shut out four times this season, after being shut out just three times all last season.

Carter Hutton made 48 saves in the Saturday shutout, but Jake Allen didn't fare as well against another Winnipeg onslaught. (The Jets had 46 shots on goal on Sunday.) Allen held them scoreless in the first period, before giving up two goals in the second period and two more in the third.

Winnipeg scored its first goal with 15:28 to go in the second. The Blues couldn't keep the puck in their end and Colton Parayko and Joel Edmundson chased the play behind the goal line. Winnipeg's Andrew Copp got it and fed Adam Lowry, alone in front of the goal, and he poked it in.

Winnipeg added a power-play goal with 4:47 to go in the period. Patrick Laine shot from Allen's right, beating him to the short side through a small hole. It was 10th power-play goal for Laine, and his 16th overall. Winnipeg's power play has been great at home, with a league-best 35.8 success rate coming into the game.

The Jets, who came into the game five points behind the Blues, got the back-breaking goal with 8:06 to go in the third as Mark Scheifele had a nifty tip of a shot by Josh Morrissey that just went inside the far post.

Less than two minutes later, Morrissey made it 4-0 on a shot from the slot after he was left unattended when Vladimir Tarasenko broke his stick and went to the bench to get a new one.

Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck faced only 24 shots in posting his second shutout of the season.

The Blues went 0 for 4 on the power play.
