After seeing their win streak end at six games in Las Vegas on Friday, the Blues' streak of games where they got points ended at seven with a resounding thud on Saturday night with a 6-0 loss to Arizona in Glendale, Ariz.
The Blues still are in one of the Western Conference's two wild-card spots, but by the thinnest of margins. The Blues are even with the Colorado Avalanche on points, have played the same number of games, are even in the first tiebreaker of regulation and overtime wins. The Blues lead the season head-to-head series two games to one (since the teams play an odd number of times, the first of the three meetings in St. Louis isn't counted), with one meeting to go on the final day of the season.
Colorado plays on Sunday at Anaheim while the Blues are off. On Monday, the Blues play Washington at Scottrade Center and the Avs are at the Kings.
Jake Allen made the start for the Blues but was pulled in the second period after Arizona went up 2-0. Blues coach Mike Yeo went over and talked to Allen as he came off the ice, presumably telling him he wasn't coming out because of anything he did. Carter Hutton came in and made his first appearance since March 3, as Yeo had stuck with the red-hot Allen.
The Blues fell behind 1-0 in the first on a goal by Luke Schenn, older brother of Blues center Brayden Schenn, shortly after a Coyotes power play had ended. It went with 2-0 just under four minutes into the second period on a goal by Richard Panik that led to Allen coming out.
The Blues had a few flurry of scoring chances after that, but couldn't get the puck in the net and Arizona took it from there.
Mitch Reinke, who signed with the team earlier this week, was pushed into duty because of Jordan Schmaltz's upper-body injury suffered on Friday. He played sparingly at first, but once the game got out of control, he saw regular playing time. He finished with 13:28 of ice time and was on the ice for none of Arizona's six goals.
Forward Scottie Upshall took a hard check from Luke Schenn in the second period, which led to a fight between Schenn and Chris Thorburn, and Upshall didn't play in the third period.
