EDMONTON, Alberta _ The Blues scored twice in the third period _ which for them constitutes an offensive explosion _ but gave up three goals in the period and lost to the Oilers, 3-2, running their losing streak to three games on Thursday night at Rogers Place.
The Blues led 1-0 and 2-1 before giving up the game-winning goal to Drake Caggiula with 49.8 seconds to play. The Oilers scored twice in the last 3:41, with Connor McDavid tying the game on a two-on-one.
After two scoreless periods, the Blues' Tage Thompson got his first NHL goal on a shot from the slot with 10:30 to play. The celebration was short-lived as Edmonton tied it 38 seconds later on a Michael Cammalleri goal. Patrik Berglund put the Blues ahead with 6:38 to go in the game, one-timing a pass by Brayden Schenn, but the Blues could not close out the win. They gave up an odd-man rush on the tying goal and the defense was watching the puck behind the goal and no one noticed Caggiula skating in to take a puck unmarked to win it.
The Blues still haven't scored more than two goals in their past six games and have six goals in those games.
Up till then, the Blues had been lucky. Edmonton hit three posts and two crossbars in the game. The Blues outshot the Oilers 36-35.
The Blues play in Vancouver on Saturday to close out a four-game Western Canada trip.
