PHILADELPHIA _ The Blues haven't been able to depend on much this season, but they can count on getting goals from their minor-league call-ups and shutouts from their backup goaltender.
Kenny Agostino made his Blues' debut Monday in Philadelphia and sealed a 2-0 win with a third-period goal. Carter Hutton made 26 saves for his third shutout this season and second in his last three starts.
The Blues, who also picked up a goal from Paul Stastny and a season-high 22 blocked shots, improved to 2-1 under new coach Mike Yeo. They will continue a five-game road trip Tuesday in Ottawa. Jake Allen is scheduled to get the start against the Senators, but that could change following Hutton's shutout.
The Blues went into Monday's game without left winger Robby Fabbri, who had his first-career hat trick earlier this season against Philadelphia but was lost for the season Saturday with an ACL injury.
The Blues finished with a half-dozen goals in a 6-3 win over the Flyers in St. Louis on Dec. 28.
In the rematch Monday, the Blues had only a half-dozen shots on goals halfway through the game. They were outshot 11-1 in the first period, and their only attempt was from 64 feet off from newcomer Kenny Agostino.
Hutton, who was getting the start on the first night of a back-to-back set for the Blues, was sharp in the first period, keeping the game scoreless at the intermission.
The Blues' penalty-killing erased to Philadelphia power plays before the visitors earned their first man-advantage, a four-minute, double-minor high-sticking call against the Flyers' Andrew MacDonald.
The Blues, though, mustered just two shots on goal over the next four minutes, and the one with the most mustard, from Alex Pietrangelo, hit Agostino in the leg and forced him to the locker room to shake it off.
Agostino returned and so did the Blues' offense after the power play expired. They scored on their next attempt, a point shot from Kevin Shattenkirk that went in off the skate of Stastny.
Philadelphia challenged the goal, not because it felt Stastny used a distinct kicking motion, but because they believed the Blues were offsides. Earlier in the scoring sequence, defenseman Carl Gunnarson had barely kept the puck in the offensive zone with a backhand, and the Flyers wanted a replay.
There was no offside call on the ice, and the review was inconclusive, so the goal stood up as Stastny's 15th of the season and eighth in his last 13 games.
It provided the Blues with a 1-0 lead with 4:38 remaining in the second period. They recorded the last 10 shots of the period, outshooting Philadelphia 11-4 in the frame, and took a one-goal lead into the third period.
The Blues added to their lead with Agostino's first goal as a Blue. He took a stretch pass from David Perron and, on a breakaway, ripped a shot past off the glove of Flyers goalie Michal Neuvirth for a 2-0 just 2:50 into the third period.
It was Agostino's second NHL goal and he only had to wait 1,039 goals between his first with Calgary on April 4, 2014 and his second on Monday.
The Blues were outshot 26-16, but Hutton and the defense held on for the shutout, thwarting a late 6-on-4 advantage that was result of a Flyers' power play and pulling the goalie for an extra attacker. They have now been blanked in back-to-back games, spanning 122:49.
