Blues beat Lightning in overtime, 1-0

TAMPA, Fla. _ Brayden Schenn scored with less than a minute to go in overtime as the St. Louis Blues won their season-high fourth game in a row, knocking off the NHL's top and highest scoring team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, 1-0, at Amalie Arena on Thursday.

Schenn chased down a long pass from Colton Parayko in the Tampa end, and with a Lightning defender closing in, shot on Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, who slowed the puck but couldn't stop it and trickled through him and in.

The win could put the Blues into the second wild-card spot in the West, depending on the result of Vancouver's game with Chicago. The Blues, on Jan. 2, were in last place in the Western Conference.

The Blues controlled the game until the third period, when Tampa Bay came alive, but Jordan Binnington stopped 11 shots in the third period to send the game to overtime.

It was the 10th goal of the season for Schenn and his fourth game-winner.

The Blues had to kill a penalty in the third period and almost got a win in regulation when they had a two-on-one short-handed break but neither Zach Sanford nor Ivan Barbashev shot and the chance vanished.

The Blues went 3-0 on the trip, including 2-0 with their fathers (and grandfathers or friends) on the trip.

The Blues ended up outshooting Tampa Bay 39-32. For Binnington, it's his second shutout in 10 starts.

The Blues had their chances in the second period, with three power plays. But they couldn't take advantage of them, failing to score on all of them as they and the Lightning remained tied at 0-0 after two periods.

The Blues managed just four shots on goal in six minutes of power play time, while Tampa Bay had two short-handed shots, both of which could have turned into goals.

Other than on power plays, where the Blues continue to look bad, the Blues have been the dominant team in the game, outshooting the Lightning 32-19. But for all the control they've had, the Blues didn't present much of a challenge to Vasilevskiy, who has been well-positioned on the Blues' shots.

The Blues had some good scoring chances in the first period, including a shot on a rebound by Schenn from close range that he couldn't get over Vasilevskiy.

Tampa Bay, which has the league's best power play, had one in the first period, but the Blues did a good job on the penalty kill, holding the Lightning to just one shot on goal.
