ST. LOUIS _ Another apparent third-period goal wiped out because of a successful offside challenge.
And another frustrating, post-regulation loss for the Devils.
The Blues won their ninth straight game in the teams' series, 3-2, in a shootout on Tuesday night at Scottrade Center. The Devils are now in an 0-1-2 slide.
Keith Kinkaid, in his first start since Dec. 9, made 27 saves for the Devils (22-10-7) but could not stop either Brayden Schenn or Vladimir Tarasenko in the shootout. Carter Hutton stopped 24 shots for the Blues (25-15-2) and denied both Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri in the shootout.
The road trip opened with Saturday's 5-2 loss at Washington as the Devils slipped out of first place in the Metropolitan Division.
The first-place Capitals won, 5-4, in overtime at Carolina on Tuesday.
Coach John Hynes has been trying to impress upon his young squad that as this season approaches its midpoint _ for the Devils, that will come after Sunday's game against the Islanders at Barclays Center _ the games and competition will only become tougher.
"It's understanding we have to do a better job with some of our structure and also managing the game with momentum swings going both ways," Hynes said.
Hall banked in a power-play goal off Hutton from a sharp angle on the left to tie the game at 2 at 1:17, just nine seconds after Alexander Steen tripped Jesper Bratt behind the Devils' net. It gave Hall and the team lead with his 13th goal.
But just like Hall's potential third-period winner in Friday's 4-3 overtime loss to the visiting Sabres, Bratt's apparent goal _ a one-timer from the right circle _ at 13:36 of the third period _ was overturned on an offside challenge. Friday, it was ruled Hall's back skate was in the air as he brought the puck over the blue line.
Tuesday, it was Marcus Johansson's skate that was ruled _ after a long review _ not to be touching the ice as his front skate was already over the blue line.
Johansson also had a potential goal immediately waved off at 2:51 of overtime as Hutton gloved his floater after Nico Hischier hit the left post.
Tuesday's first period was a disappointing continuation of all of Saturday's loss for the Devils as the Blues controlled play from the opening faceoff, finishing with a 14-4 shot advantage.
Kinkaid, though, prevented the Blues from taking more than the 1-0 lead they held, though he did wind up out of position on Tarasenko's goal at 12:48.
Kinkaid spent his three weeks on the sidelines working with goalie coach Roland Melanson on some technical aspects of his game, including minimizing second and third chances.
But after Sami Vatanen gave away the puck in the Devils' zone, Tarasenko got to the right post to tap in a rebound with Kinkaid windup up above the blue paint.
Hischier, tipping Sami Vatanen's feed from the blue line _ the shot was going wide of the right post before Hischier extended his stick onto the puck _ tied the game at 1 at 12:36 of the second period.
It was the No. 1 overall pick's third goal in four games.
But Vladimir Sobotka tipped Tage Thompson's shot from the left circle over Kinkaid's glove to put the Blues back ahead, 2-1, at 18:08 of the second period.
Hutton made his best save at 2:06 of the second period on what appeared to be a short-handed gimme for Blake Coleman low in the slot. But Hutton, who had turned the puck over to Brian Gibbons in the left corner, recovered to make a sliding stop on Coleman.
