Bluecoat invites you to time travel to the bottom of the ocean

Visitors are invited to time travel to the bottom of the ocean - 150 years in the future - in Bluecoat 's summer exhibition.

The virtual reality work, by London-based Shezad Dawood, explores what the future may hold for our seas in a world heavily affected by climate change.

It is displayed alongside his epic film series Leviathan, as well as a number of textiles and neon works.

Leviathan follows the migratory patterns of people between Europe and Africa, many of whom are making the journey as refugees.

It looks at how their turbulent journeys mirror the tumultuous ecological changes in the sea over which they travel.

Also exhibited at the School Lane arts centre this summer is work by Grace Ndiritu, which draws on The Ark - a live art project she led in Paris based on her own experiences of living in New Age communities.

In 2017, she invited scientists, artists, gardeners, economists, a chef and spiritual workers to spend nine days focussing on radical new ways of solving the 21st century's problems.

At Bluecoat, she shares archival materials from those nine days, as well as protest placards and animal costumes produced for a street parade.

Adam Smythe, head of programme, said: "The timing of these two exhibitions feels very appropriate, with stories regarding migration, climate change and our relationship with the environment very much in the news at the moment.

Whilst Shezad Dawood’s Leviathan explores where we are in terms of environmental and societal problems, Grace Ndiritu’s work The Ark invites us to offer potential solutions, and is hopeful that such problems can be overcome."

Shezad Dawood: Leviathan and Grace Ndiritu is at Bluecoat until October 13, 2019.
