Blue Peter presenter Max Stahl dies aged 66 after cancer battle

Blue Peter host and TV presenter Max Stahl has died at the age of 66.

Best known for his role on the popular children's programme, Max was also a war correspondent and brought worldwide attention to the East Timor conflict.

It has been reported that he passed away on Wednesday (October 27) in a hospital in Brisbane, Australia after a long battle with cancer.

Max - known to fans as Christopher Wenner - joined Blue Peter in 1978 and left just two years later.

He later returned to Blue Peter in 1983 and again in 1998 to celebrate the programme’s birthdays.

Since the announcement of his passing, tributes have poured in for the reporter and TV presenter from fans and fellow journalists.

Taking to Twitter, journalist Sophie McNeill posted: "Very sad to hear about the death of the legendary Max Stahl.

"There’s not many people you can point to and say their bravery help changed the course of a nation for the better, but Max is one of them. Vale Max, RIP. You were a legend."

Actor and writer Nicholas Pegg tweeted: "Sad news. I have fond memories of his brief stint on Blue Peter, bridging the gap between John Noakes and Peter Duncan. I knew he’d been in Doctor Who too, but I had absolutely no idea that he went on to do such remarkable things thereafter. What a career."

During his time on the iconic children's show, Blue Peter, the TV star began his career in theatre as an actor and director.

In 1984, fans will remember Max’s appearance in the Doctor Who adventure The Awakening.

Alongside his work on the show, Max was also a war correspondent and won awards for his coverage.

He reported from Chechnya and Beirut during the 1980s and 1990s.

Max filmed the atrocities in East Timor in 1991, when 271 protesters against Indonesian rule were massacred in Dili’s Santa Cruz cemetery.

His portrayal of the disputes brought a turning point in the fight for East Timor's independence.
