Blue Monday: Free plants being given away outside Haymarket in Edinburgh to cheer people up

Mondays can be a drag after the weekend but today is thought to be especially challenging, dubbed "the most depressing day of the year".

January 20 is officially known as "Blue Monday", thanks to the post-festive slump, cold weather, being broke after Christmas and a lack of motivation.

But a family-run plant business are helping people overcome this melancholy Monday with free goodies, by harnessing the power of biophilia - which relates to human's love of nature.

The plant experts at Benholm Group will be popping up at Haymarket from around 8:15am this morning to give away free peace lilies to passersby.

Headed up by four brothers - Adrian, Derek, Mike and Steve Byne - Benholm are specialists in transforming work spaces with greenery.

Benholm wrote on Twitter: "With plants scientifically proven to boost both physical and mental health, our GIVEAWAY is sure to chase the blues away! Don't be blue - be green."
