Blue Jackets edge Blackhawks, 3-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio _ The Blue Jackets defeated the Blackhawks, 3-2, while the Hawks lost a defenseman after Trevor van Riemsdyk left the game in the second period.

Van Riemsdyk went back to the Hawks' dressing room holding his right arm after a play in which he crashed into the net during the second period. There was no immediate word on his status.

In an unusual move, coach Joel Quenneville dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen for the game. Van Riemsdyk drew back into the lineup while Brian Campbell, who had appeared as if he might be a scratch, stayed in the lineup. Vincent Hinostroza was instead the healthy scratch. Quenneville rotated all seven defensemen.

The Jackets scored in the first off the weak Hawks penalty kill. The unit has been abominable early in the season, a trend that continued Friday in allowing the first goal of the game to Zach Werenski 10 minutes, 50 seconds into the first period. Werenski scored on a shot from the point thanks to a screen from winger Nick Foligno. Werenski had a clean shot and no Hawks came to move Foligno from in front of Crawford. The Jackets finished with 18 shots on goal in the first period.

The Hawks got on the board thanks to the first NHL goal from Tyler Motte at 2:29 of the second period. But the kill bit them again later in the period. Foligno once again posted in front of Crawford with no interference from the Hawks and put home a loose puck at 4:36. The Blue Jackets added a goal later in the period on a deflection from William Karlsson to make it 3-1.

Richard Panik made it 3-2 after he sniped home a shot off a bouncing puck 5:54 into the third, but the Hawks could not get the equalizer.
