Blue Jackets 4, Senators 3: Joonas Korpisalo returns in net, and Emil Bemstrom wins it in OT

COLUMBUS, Ohio _ The Blue Jackets were active but fairly quiet at Monday's trade deadline. Their game that night was anything but quiet.

Joonas Korpisalo returned to the ice for the first time since Dec. 29, and Emil Bemstrom scored the winner with 24.8 seconds left in overtime for a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators at Nationwide Arena, ending the Jackets' losing streak at eight games.

After Marcus Hogberg saved Zach Werenski's initial shot, Bemstrom skated onto the puck and ended the game.

The crowd hit every emotion imaginable midway through the second period when goalie Elvis Merzlikins left the ice for the locker room. Anthony Duclair had a breakaway chance for the Senators with 8:46 remaining when his knee hit Merzlikins in the head and sent him onto his back.

The arena was quiet. Then they booed the officials for not giving Duclair a penalty.

After missing eight weeks because of an MCL injury, Korpisalo grabbed his helmet and skated toward the crease to a deafening roar accompanied by Guns N' Roses' "Welcome To The Jungle."

Less than two minutes later, Jackets captain Nick Foligno energized the crowd further with his second goal of the game to tie the score at 2 with 7:28 remaining in the period. The goal came on a perfect feed to the back post from Boone Jenner.

Foligno had scored on the Jackets' first shot 4:10 into the first period on a pass from Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Ottawa's Colin White scored with 10:44 remaining in the third period to take a brief 3-2 lead before the Blue Jackets' Stefan Matteau tipped one into the back of the Senators' net off a shot from Scott Harrington just 29 seconds later.

Foligno said at the first intermission that the majority of the Jackets' play in the first period was "unacceptable."

The Jackets weren't perfect in the game, but as in their streak of 24 of 26 games with at least a point, they found a way.
