Blue crab washes up in Dollymount as biodiversity experts urge people to keep eyes peeled

Biodiversity Ireland have urged people to keep their eyes peeled after a blue crab washed up in Dollymount.

The blue crab is a species of crab native to the waters of the western Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

It has been spotted in the Mediterranean Sea as well.

It is an invasive species in Europe, which can "compete with (and often out-compete) native species, spread disease and even alter habitats," according to the biodiversity experts.

And they are urging people to keep an eye out for the distinctive light-blue shade along the coasts of Ireland after one seemingly lost critter was spotted in Dublin.

They said: "Have you spotted a Blue crab on our shores lately? If so, please report suspected sightings with photo if possible.

"Trying to find out if this was a one-off occurrence or are there more out there.

"Report invasives. Don't release non-native species to the wild"
