Blue-Based Earthtongue: Rare fungus discovered in UK for first time

• A fungus, the Blue-Based Earthtongue (Microglossum cyanobasis), has been discovered in the UK for the first time, almost 20 years after its initial recognition in Spain.
• Fungi enthusiast Liz Frost spotted the species at Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve in West Sussex.
• The small, delicate fungus, notable for its bluish-green base, was confirmed through DNA sequencing, showing a 99 per cent match with the Spanish sample.
• Experts say the Earthtongue fungus is easily missed due to its size and camouflage, standing at only 4.5-5cm high.
• Its presence indicates high-quality, undisturbed, nutrient-poor grasslands and long-established woodland soils, underscoring the ecological importance of the nature reserve.
