For centuries, the colour blue has been sought out by artists across the globe. The laborious process involved in extracting pigment and creating the colour has meant it has long been prized and laden with symbolic meaning: prestige, divinity and eternity.
Blue: The Alchemy of a Colour displays works on paper from the 7th century through to highly detailed contemporary textiles and ceramics. The walls, ceiling and floors of the Gallery of Asian Art will be painted in three shades of blue and display more than 70 works.
These include Japanese indigo-dyed garments, an indigo Burmese jacket, an 18th century English cotton bodice, detailed Japanese woodblock prints and cobalt blue and white Chinese and European ceramics.
