Blow for Republic of Ireland and Mick McCarthy as Nathan Redmond named in England squad

Ireland's hopes of securing the services of Nathan Redmond were dealt a massive blow today as the Southampton man was named in Gareth Southgate's initial England squad for the Nations League finals.

Overlooked since winning his one and only England cap in March 2017, the 25-year-old scooped the Player of the Year double at Saints' end of year awards after a fine campaign.

The news comes after Ireland manager Mick McCarthy held talks with the player's agent in late 2018 and earlier this year, but still harboured hope that the winger would defer to Ireland.

Speaking in January, McCarthy said: "To be fair, he’s had some really good games over recent months. He’d be one I’d be delighted to get if we could.

“I’ve got to go and meet him. I spoke to his agent. I’ve not spoken to Nathan. I tried to get to meet him before Christmas and it didn’t happen."

Southgate believes Redmond deserved his return to the England fold after the winger scored nine goals in the second half of the season.

Speaking at a press conference, the England manager said: "I think he finished the season really well. I think the new manager has had a positive effect: a lot of pace, playing the high press and has started to score more regularly.

"It is a really good opportunity for Nathan."

Southgate named a 27-man group ahead of this summer's inaugural finals in Portugal, although he will need to cut the group down to 23 by May 27.

Unsurprisingly there are no uncapped players in Southgate's selection, but there is a shock call-up for Redmond.

England captain Harry Kane has been selected despite an ankle ligament injury, while Harry Winks has also got the nod after groin surgery.

Former Ireland star Declan Rice has retained his place at midfield, having made two appearances since announcing that he was to declare for England.
