Blow for Queen of the South and Annan Athletic as latest lockdown means no fans back at games

Queen of the South and Annan Athletic have both been dealt major blows by the latest lockdown announcement from the Scottish Government.

The Boxing Day match at Palmerston against Dundee was supposed to be the first time since March that Doonhamers could back their team at home.

However First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s weekend announcement put Scotland back into lockdown at midnight.

Simon Clingan from the Queens Supporters Liaison Committee said: “It is disappointing.

“From the club’s point of view they had put a fair bit of work in to getting ready for Saturday.

“They had to make arrangements for additional stewarding and other costs so right across the board it is a big disappointment.

“Speaking to other fans they were all really looking forward to getting back in and watching the team too even if results haven’t been the best.

“Fans could make a difference.

“If you think back to the Inverness game fans could’ve given the team a real lift.

“There’s the social aspect as well. A lot of fans look forward to the games and seeing folk they know.

“For some fans who are on their own, games are a big help.”

The Palmerston safety officer Phil Stewart said the club had put in a lot of work to get to this stage but understood the move the government made last week.

He said: “I feel for the fans and for the club. It’s been a long nine months since we had fans in the ground.

“There are some very loyal Queen of the South supporters that have bought season tickets and supported the club.

“Unfortunately, for the moment, all the hard work we’ve put in place to follow the guidelines has been usurped as we go into level four.

“It’s a shame but the government has to do what it can to ensure we’re protected.

“However, when we get the word we will be ready to go to bring fans back.”
