Blow for Peterborough United's promotion hopes as on-loan Bristol City forward suffers injury

Sammie Szmodics has sustained a hamstring injury and is set to be out for the rest of the month, Bristol Live understands.

Szmodics, who is on lon at League One promotion contenders Peterborough from Bristol City for the rest of the season, suffered the injury during Saturday's 2-0 victory over Portsmouth in which he played 88 minutes.

It's unclear if the forward will remain at Peterborough to undergo his rehab or return to Ashton Gate, but given the injury isn't viewed as particularly serious, it's likely to be the former option.

The 24-year-old is definitely out of Saturday's away trip to Bolton Wanderers and isn't expected to return for the following home matches against Bristol Rovers and Blackpool.

Missing that trio of games against teams either struggling or marooned in mid-table will be seen as some consolation but the Posh will be hoping Szmodics does return in time to face league leaders Coventry on April 4.

Peterborough are sixth in League One, just three points behind Rotherham United in second in a desperately tight battle for promotion into the Championship.

Since arriving at Peterborough from City in mid-January, Szmodics has only added to their exceptional attacking arsenal with his dribbling, pace and overall penetration in the final third.

He has four goals and three assists in 10 appearances, averaging a direct goal involvement every 115 minutes. He was also named in the League One Team of the Week for three weeks running between the end of January and beginning of February.

Bristol City remain committed to keeping Szmodics at Ashton Gate in the long-term, having signed him from Colchester United last summer.

He was given minimal opportunity to make an impact in a red shirt over the first half of the season, playing just 107 minutes, with head coach Lee Johnson claiming he needed consistent gametime elsewhere to build up his experience beyond League Two.
