Blow for Government as Slaintecare hit by another resignation

There was another setback for Slaintecare on Thursday when Professor Anthony O'Connor became the third top official to quit the Implementation Advisory Council.

It is believed he has stepped down due to governance issues within the organisation but Prof O’Connor said he did not want to comment publicly.

Prof O’ Connor, the Clinical Lead of the Department of Gastroenterology at Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin, sent a resignation letter to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly in recent days.

The Cork native previously vented his frustration on Twitter over the resignations of chairperson Professor Tom Keane and executive director Laura Magahy.

There had been significant frustration expressed by committee members in recent weeks at the slow pace and progress of reform implementation within Slaintecare.

Prof O’Connor’s resignation comes just over three weeks after Prof Tom Keane and Ms Magahy stepped down on September 8.

The chairperson said he quit because he had “come to conclude that the requirements for implementing this unprecedented programme for change are seriously lacking”.

Professor Keane also highlighted the “selfless leadership, commitment and incredibly hard work” of Ms Magahy.

He was appointed chairperson to his role as chairperson in June 2019 and she became executive director in July 2018.
