Blow darts and broken bones: WWII veterans remember

"As year follows year, more old men disappear," sang Eric Bogle in his anti-war classic The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. "Someday no-one will march there at all."

Bogle's song was written about World War I, but its message has now started to apply to World War II.

Many WWII veterans are now well into their 90s and there's a danger their stories could go unrecorded.

ABC producer Lincoln Tyner recently spoke to four South Australian veterans who each performed remarkable deeds.

Cyril Johnson on luck, survival and determination

Initially rejected as being "unfit for all flying categories," Cyril Johnson became a much-travelled RAF pilot. On a flight to Singapore, he broke his back when the plane crashed, but that didn't stop him from joining Bomber Command as a Lancaster pilot. He later became an intelligence officer at Bletchley Park in England.

Dean Stanton was immortalised on canvas

Dean Stanton left his home in the Flinders Ranges determined to become a pilot. He flew night-time raids over Italy in Wellingtons and Liberators and was immortalised on canvas by war artist Dean Adams.

Rex Lipman on a full and active life

Rex Lipman is 92 and his birthday falls the day after Anzac Day. He lied about his age so he could join the Army, serving as a Commando behind the Japanese lines in Timor. Later, he branched out into dentistry, merchant banking, tourism, horseracing and winemaking.

He plays tennis regularly and is a keen problem-solver, and was recently featured on 7.30 SA.

Jack Tredrea is still lethal with a blow dart

Jack Tredrea was forbidden to speak about his wartime activities in the elite 'Z' unit for more than three decades. He organised a mobile guerrilla force employing 'hit and run' tactics against the Japanese and, as this video shows, he is still lethal with a blow dart.
