Bloomberg Businessweek editor Josh Tyrangiel has resigned after six years at the company.

Deputy editor Ellen Pollock will replace Tyrangiel, becoming the magazine’s first female editor since its founding in 1929.

Reto Gregori, a member of Bloomberg’s editorial management committee, will take on oversight of Businessweek, Bloomberg Markets, Bloomberg Pursuits and Bloomberg’s investigative unit as interim head of magazines.

In a note to colleagues Tyrangiel, who was also Bloomberg’s chief content officer, said Friday would be his last day, and he would now “think about what comes next”.

He added: “No one waves the flag for great journalism higher (or louder) than Ellen. She’s an inspiration — and the best editor I’ve ever worked with. The magazine would be no good, and no fun, without her.”

Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Micklethwait said Tyrangiel had told him when he joined Bloomberg in December after eight years as editor-in-chief of the Economist that he would be moving on within a year.

In an email to staff Micklethwait wrote: “Josh told me that he was a restless soul and that at some time in the next year or so he would move on. I am sad that it will be tomorrow, but we should all be extremely grateful for all that he has done for Bloomberg, across all our platforms.”

The last two years of Tyrangiel’s time at Bloomberg has seen a major overhaul of Businessweek, as well as the launch of website Bloomberg Business and the development of new vertical brands such as Bloomberg Politics.

However, the return this year of Michael Bloomberg as chief executive of the company he founded and the appointment of Micklethwait were seen as signals the company was looking to change the direction of its media business.

In a statement, Bloomberg said: “Hiring Josh as the editor of Businessweek was a great decision for Bloomberg. In his six years here, he has had a profound impact. I’m sad to see him go, but our media properties are in a great place and I’m grateful for his contributions.”
