Martice Mitchell showcases all the promise and potential you would want in a 6-9 versatile big man.
Blessed with the coveted high ceiling, Mitchell has size and length, runs the floor like a guard and boasts emerging skills for a player his size.
Now it’s about development, consistent production and becoming the player so many envision.
Minnesota and coach Richard Pitino will the get the opportunity to do just that as Mitchell committed to the Golden Gophers on Monday.
Mitchell, one of the top five prospects in Illinois in the Class of 2020, liked the overall fit and feel he had at Minnesota while on his official visit the final weekend in September. He soon realized Minnesota was where he wanted to play his college basketball after receiving several high-major offers and visiting Rutgers and Xavier.
“Their team had a good chemistry, and I got along with everyone there,” Mitchell said. “That was important to me. I also like the location. I like the Twin Cities a lot.”
Mitchell is the third Bloom player to commit in the last week. Senior guards Donovan Newby and Dante Maddox Jr. committed to Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Cal-State Fullerton, respectively.

Senior guard Keshawn Williams, who is also among the top five senior prospects in Illinois, and newcomer Christian Shumate are two more Division I prospects on the Bloom roster. Both are still sorting out their recruitments.
