Bloody Bridge visitors leave trail of rubbish behind

Eleven bags of rubbish were cleaned up by National Trust staff on Friday morning after crowds gathered for BBQs and parties.

The Bloody Bridge, on the path to Slieve Donard is a popular hotspot for locals and those from outside of the Newcastle area - but Rangers have hit back after a trail of dirt was left for them to tidy.

In a statement they said: "Our Rangers spent three hours filling 11 bags of rubbish at Bloody Bridge this morning.

"A fire was also set [on Thursday night] which had to be attended to by fire crews."

They added: "These beauty spots deserve more of your respect, so please take away the rubbish you bring with you, and with this hot weather, use common sense and don’t bring BBQs with you to protect the fragile habitats we work hard to look after. #LeaveNoTrace"

Speaking to Belfast Live, SDLP councillor, Colin McGrath, said: "We all love our natural beauty and we have plenty of it here in Ireland. People are feeling very restricted at present with the lockdown and are delighted when regulations are lifted and people can go to new places including places like Murlough.

"But I would ask people to be very careful of their rubbish. Our local beauty spots are incredibly busy at the moment and are being covered by a skelton-staff basis and this is causing bins to overflow and rubbish to gather at these sites.

"Please where people can bring you littler home and as a bare minimum please use the bins provided. It’s good for our beauty spots and good for the environment."
