'Bloodborne' 120 FPS on PS5 Launches Thanks to a Mod, But There's a Catch

FromSoftware's "Bloodborne" can now be played on the PlayStation 5 at a 120 FPS refresh rate, meaning that the game will be more fluid and more enjoyable to play.

It is important to note that one of the conditions needed to unlock this is to have the latest console, the game's copy, as well as a display that can process at least 120 FPS.

'Bloodborne' 120 FPS Mod Is Now Coming to PS5

"Bloodborne" fans have been asking FromSoftware and Sony for a performance patch for years, and neither has delivered one officially. Because of this, a modder has now stepped in and done what the publishers would not, making 120 FPS gameplay possible on PS5 hardware for the first time.

According to a report from the Digital Foundry, an upcoming mod developed by a creator known as Christina allows "Bloodborne" to run at a consistent 120 FPS on jailbroken PS5 consoles. The mod uses a frame-rate unlock patch that takes advantage of the PS5's 120Hz display mode at 1080p resolution.

Digital Foundry noted that while the mod was not yet publicly available at the time of their report, they expect that it will be released shortly.

The same mod also makes it possible to push "Bloodborne's" native rendering resolution up to full 4K on PS5. The tradeoff is that running at 4K locks the game back to 30 FPS, and this pushes players to make the tough choice of choosing between resolution and frame rate, depending on their preference and display setup.

Why Is This Only Possible Through a Mod?

"Bloodborne" launched in 2015 on PS4 and has been locked to 30 FPS on PlayStation hardware ever since. Sony has never released an official PS5 performance patch for the game, despite fan demand and the fact that the hardware is more than capable of running it at higher frame rates.

According to Kotaku, running "Bloodborne" at 60 FPS on jailbroken PS4 consoles has been possible for several years, but 120 FPS was previously out of reach on consoles.

For players who want to experience the game above 30 FPS without jailbreaking anything, the PS4 emulator ShadPS4 has made 120 FPS playback possible on PC for some time.

The new PS5 mod brings that same capability to native hardware for the first time, though it requires either a jailbroken PS5 or an unpatched unit running firmware from before approximately 2022.

Will Sony Finally Release an Official Patch?

The existence of the mod renews a question that fans have been asking for years, with players speculating why Sony skipped releasing a proper PlayStation 5 upgrade for "Bloodborne," despite being one of the most acclaimed PlayStation exclusives. The game consistently ranks among the best games ever made, and its 30 FPS cap is one of the most discussed technical limitations in gaming.

Sony has not commented on Christina's mod or indicated any plans to release an official performance patch. The modding community's ability to unlock 120 FPS on PS5 hardware suggests that the technical barrier to doing so officially is not as significant as Sony's silence might imply.
