Blood-soaked man found 'stabbed in heart' inside Glasgow flat, murder trial hears

A police officer told jurors in a murder trial how he helped try to save the life of a man as he lay bleeding on the floor of a Glasgow flat.

PC Gary Hutchison was called to the property in Summertown Path in Govan around midnight on August 31 last year.

He and a colleague were initially directed to the ground floor flat by a woman outside before they went into the living room.

Recalling the scene, PC Hutchison today told the High Court in Glasgow: "There was a male lying on the floor covered in blood.

"There was also someone kneeling doing CPR, by the looks of it.

"There were a couple of pools of blood. He (the man on the floor) was not breathing.

"There were two distinct puncture or stab wounds. The most obvious one was right in the middle of the chest where the heart would be.

"I took over CPR at that point."

The officer was the first witness in the trial of 22-year-old Reece Sweeney.

He denies murdering Jamie McGready, 33, at the property by repeatedly striking him on the body with a knife or similar item.

Mr McGready is said to have been left so severely injured that he died at the city's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

PC Hutchison was asked by prosecutor Bill McVicar if he had performed CPR "for some time".

The officer agreed and recalled later learning the man had passed away after he had been taken in an ambulance to hospital.

PC Hutchison went on to be questioned by Sweeney's QC Donald Findlay.

The defence advocate asked: "By the time you got there, he was in a very poor condition?"

The constable: "Yes."

The trial, before judge Lord Boyd, continues.
