'Blood Rain' weather phenomenon showers Scotland with Sahara Desert dust

Scots who found their cars covered in a layer of red dust this week can blame it on a rare weather phenomenon called “Blood Rain”.

Weather experts say parts of the country have been showered by sand coming from the Sahara Desert thanks to the record-breaking Easter heatwave.

It also created colourful sunrises on Tuesday and yesterday.

Met Office forecaster Luke Miall explained: “It only comes to ground when we get showers.”

Blood Rain is caused when desert sand is lifted into the atmosphere and transported north by the wind.

Raindrops collect the red particle and when they land of something, they eventually evaporate and leave a layer of dust.
