Blood rain: Saharan dust falls on UK thanks to Easter heatwave

Blood rain has fallen on the UK covering cars in a layer of red dust.

And experts say the Easter heatwave to blame for the rare weather phenomenon.

The country has been showered by sand coming from the Sahara Desert, reports the Daily Record.

The deposits are particularly visible on cars and windows and southern parts of the UK were worst hit, forecasters said.

And the dust not only causes the red blood-like rain but also spectacular sunrises which were reported earlier this week.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson said: "Strong winds over the Sahara whip up dust.

"That goes into the sky and upper part of the atmosphere and heads towards the UK.

"Once we get some rain, that washes it out the sky and onto the ground."

People took to Twitter to joke about washing their cars, with BBC journalist James Vickery saying: "Anyone else have a fine layer of dust on their cars this morning? Or have I been living in denial that mine REALLY needs that wash?"

Another Twitter user said: "Thanks Sahara Dust. Now I can wash the car again."

UK weather forecast: Thunderstorms with lightning, hail and gusts batter Britain

Blood Rain is caused when desert sand is lifted into the atmosphere and transported north by the wind.

Raindrops collect the red particle and when they land of something, they eventually evaporate and leave a layer of dust.

The French areas of Brittany and Normandy have been placed on "orange" alert for pollution, due to a combination of the Saharan desert dust and local car emissions.

Changing weather systems mean that further deposits of the red dust are not likely, according to the Met Office.
