'Blood on playground' as forensic detectives spotted at school

The grounds of a school were this morning being combed by forensics after blood spatters were reportedly found on the playground.

Merseyside Police were called just after midnight, on July 16, to a report that a man had attempted to break into a house on Folkestone Road, in Southport.

Officers arrived at the scene and searched the local area in a bid to find the suspected burglar.

A 48-year-old man, from Southport , was subsequently found in the grounds of Kew Woods Primary School, on Ovington Drive.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and was taken to a police station to be questioned.

Following the incident parents reported seeing 'blood' on the playground of the school and it is understood the play area of the school was closed off and the back entrance.

A message was circulated to parents and guardians by the school which read: "There was an incident outside of school in the early hours which has nothing to do with the school.

"A person was arrested by the police on the grounds.

"The school grounds had to remain closed for forensic examination.

"The school gates and doors will be open as normal at the end of the day."

It is not known whether the suspect was injured.
