Blood on pavement after man bottled in drunken New Year's Day street fight

Police cordoned off a blood stained street after a man was slashed with a bottle during a drunken New Year's Day fight.

The victim suffered a cut to his hand after the violent scenes in Southport around 6am today.

Pictures on social media show two police cars and a taped off section of Coronation Walk off Lord Street.

The crime scene is close to The Sir Henry Segrave pub - although police said there is no suggestion the men involved in the street "altercation" had been in the bar.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said they were called at 6.12am to "reports of an altercation between two intoxicated males" and early investigations suggest the injured man was cut on the hand as a result of "a broken bottle".

At this stage it is not believed he was seriously hurt or required hospital treatment.

The spokesman added: "An area of pavement has been taped off because of blood on the pavement."
