Blood erupts from Russian weightlifter's nose during near half-tonne deadlift

Blood has erupted from the nose of a Russian weightlifter lifting more than 400 kilograms during a competition in the United States.

Footage shows the moment Mikhail Shivlyakov's face was splattered in blood as he performed a 426kg deadlift at the 2018 Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio.

The 37-year-old former Russian Navy marine managed to complete the lift and take a bow before wiping the blood away.

But despite his efforts, he did not take out the Strongman title.

Game of Thrones actor Hafthor Bjornsson, who plays The Mountain, took out the top spot with a world record deadlift of 472kg.

The competition — named after actor Arnold Schwarzenegger — was founded in 1989.

The chief executive and coaching director of Powerlifting Australia, Robert Wilks, said "a build-up of pressure" could trigger nose bleeds in weightlifters, but it was rarely seen.

He said those wishing to compete did not need a doctor's certificate to prove they were in good health because it was "a relatively low injury" sport.

"Powerlifting is a health-engendering activity — by getting stronger your health is improved," he said.
