'Blood curdling' screams heard as people run for cover from 'knifeman' in Levenshulme - someone was stabbed during the terrifying attack

A witness has described hearing 'blood curdling screams' during a knife attack in Levenshulme this evening.

A man has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries following reports of a stabbing on Albert Road, in the heart of the suburb, just after 7pm.

His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Images and video footage show a man being taken to the ground by police officers close to Levenshulme train station.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault, police have confirmed.

He remains in custody and is due to be questioned by officers about the incident tonight.

One witness told the Manchester Evening News onlookers were forced to run for cover as the 'terrifying' attack unfolded.

They said: “I heard blood curdling screams from the bridge on Albert Road.

“I saw a man running past us with a wound on the side of his head. He seemed to be running in terror and seeking help for his injuries and kept running towards Slade Lane.

“People on the street found safe places to hide.”

The witness then saw a man, who was missing a shoe, with his hands 'covered in blood'.

He was 'shouting abuse' at passing drivers and 'acting erratically' in the middle of the road, they said.

The witness said she had to run for cover in a nearby barber’s shop with another passerby.

“I feared for my safety

“Police were there in a matter of minutes and detained him.

“I saw the ambulance come quick so I hope my call helped them get to him quicker.

“The police were there really quickly.”

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “Police were called at 7.10pm to Albert Road in Levenshulme following reports that a male had been stabbed.

“Officers attended and arrested an adult male on suspicion of Section 18 assault.

“A victim suffered serious, but not life-threatening, injuries and was given medical assistance at the scene.”

Albert Road is currently closed in both directions between Marshall Road and the A6 Stockport Road.

A police cordon remains in place.
