Blood covered SPAR floor as pensioner stabbed in the back in Headingley

A pensioner who was stabbed in the back in the early hours of this morning staggered to a petrol station almost half a mile away to call an ambulance.

The 72-year-old man was stabbed on Moor Road, Headingley, at around 4am this morning.

The attacker fled the scene, leaving the man to walk to the SPAR store at the BP garage on Otley Road.

A member of staff told LeedsLive there was "a lot of blood" coming from the man's wound as he waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Rashid Iqbal, who works in the SPAR store, said: "There were police here because a man came in and he had been stabbed in the back.

"There was a lot of blood. It was all over the floor.

"Our staff called the police and an ambulance. He is now in hospital."

The man was taken to hospital and is receiving treatment to his injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening.

A scene was put in place at the BP garage and also at the junction of Moor Road and Monk Bridge Road, although they were both lifted by 8.30am.

Detective Inspector Carl Morrison, of Leeds District CID, said: "We are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this incident and would like to hear from anyone who was in the area and witnessed anything suspicious that could assist the investigation."
