Blood Bikes Scotland health charity turns to electric power

CHARITY Blood Bikes Scotland is now able to help the NHS in a more eco-friendly way.

The organisation has just taken delivery of its first electric motorcycle – thanks to a grant from Keep Scotland Beautiful.

The £24,896 award was provided from the Community Climate Asset Fund to enable the volunteer group to buy the electric bike and a charging station.

Backed by Hollywood star and motorbike fan Ewan McGregor, Blood Bikes Scotland provides a free-of-charge transport service to the NHS in the east of Scotland from the Borders up to Fife.

The team moves small, urgent items from one site to another or to a patient’s home – helping to support the likes of GPs, district nurses, care homes and community hospitals.

The Zero Motorcycles SR/S is powered by a 14.4kWh battery pack and electric motor developing 110hp, giving it a top speed of 124mph.

Supplied by Edinburgh-based Saltire Motorcycles, it has a city range of 161 miles, and a combined motorway distance of 109 miles before it will need to be powered up.

Using an optional 6kW rapid charger, it takes just an hour to recharge a premium-version SR/S – such as the charity’s machine – to 95 per cent.
