Blondie's Debbie Harry says heroin addiction was a 'full-time occupation'

Debbie Harry has opened up about her addiction to heroin, comparing it to having a full-time job.

The Blondie lead singer, now 74, has said that tracking down and scoring the drug made the addiction a "drag".

It was all the effort that went into being a drug addict that eventually made her give it up.

Debbie compared herself to fellow addict Amy Winehouse, saying she didn't do them while she was working like the late singer.

Speaking to ES Magazine, Debbie said: "I wasn't taking drugs when I was working, so when I was working I wasn't taking drugs. It wasn't like I was, what’s her name? She didn't want to go to rehab...

"Drugs are a funny thing. The thing that drove me away from taking them was having to acquire them and what a drag that was.

"It was kind of a full-time occupation and a waste of time. It became unpleasant. Luckily for me I was able to handle the withdrawal."

Debbie shot to fame as the lead singer of Blondie in the late seventies and early eighties.

She recently spoke about the horrendous rape at knifepoint she suffered in her home.

Speaking to Sunday Times magazine, she said: "I did cry - quite a bit. And then I felt very angry.

"And I think that's where women are frustrated. Because there's nothing you can do."

She did not go to the police because she thought she would not be believed and that they would not help her.

Debbie continued: "You go to the police and you're perhaps looks at as being crazy or lying, and then you're becoming the victim again, in yet another situation.

"I knew there would be no satisfaction in going to the police. So I didn't."
