Blokes belted in baseball bat attacks

Newcastle courthouse.

ONE man was confronted and attacked with a baseball bat when he pulled into his driveway at Woodberry on Friday night.

Another was found on the Beresfield railway overpass bridge suffering serious head injuries in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two separate attacks that detectives say have one thing in common; Cameron Reginald Welsh.

Mr Welsh, 22, who police say knew both victims, was arrested at a home at New Lambton on Saturday and charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage.

He did not enter any pleas when he appeared in Newcastle Bail Court on Sunday, but his solicitor, Hannah Bruce, applied for bail, telling a registrar strict bail conditions, including an order that Mr Welsh not leave the house unless with his mother, could mitigate any concerns about him endangering the community.

Ms Bruce said Mr Welsh could also report to police and not contact any of the victims or witnesses.

The prosecution opposed bail, saying Mr Welsh posed an unacceptable risk of failing to appear and endangering the community.

They pointed to the seriousness of the allegations, his record for violence, warrants for his arrest in the past and the fact he was currently on a community corrections order.

Ultimately, the registrar refused Mr Welsh bail and the matter was adjourned to Maitland Local Court on Monday.

Detectives say a 23-year-old man pulled into his driveway about 8.50pm on Friday and was allegedly confronted by Mr Welsh, who was armed with a baseball bat.

Mr Welsh allegedly assaulted the man as he attempted to get out of his car.

The man managed to break free and ran inside his home as Mr Welsh allegedly smashed up his vehicle and then fled the scene.

The 23-year-old suffered a fractured elbow and was treated at hospital.

Detectives say about 3.40am on Saturday a 24-year-old man was found at the railway overpass bridge on Railway Parade, Beresfield, suffering serious head injuries. He was treated by paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment. He remains in a stable condition.

Detectives launched an investigation and arrested Mr Welsh at his mother's house in New Lambton about 2pm on Saturday.
