Blog jam: The Recommender

The Recommender music blog
The Recommender … seeking out the 'very awesome and very new'

Who are you and what's your blog called?

My name is Mike Bradford and I'm the founder of the Recommender.

Where are you based?

Brighton, UK.

Describe your blog in a sentence

An established UK music blog covering awesome emerging sounds from around the world.

How long has your blog been going?

It started in March 2008 on Wordpress. For some unknown reason, Spring 2008 seems a bumper period for the birth of decent music blogs, with the likes of You Can Call Me Pelski, Breaking More Waves, the Sock Formation, Aye Tunes, Cougar Microbes, Echoes & Dust, Sheena Beaston and Tastes Like Caramel (among others), all appearing around that time.

What music do you write about?

Anything, so long as it's very awesome and very new. You will find stuff with genuine potential on our site, although we're not known for covering much hip-hop, heavy rock, drum'n'bass, jazz and specialist dance music.

Why should people visit your blog?

We aim to be an essential part of your music discovery. We provide quality choices from the world of emerging music, with some enjoyable, researched editorial. Try us, you never know, you might just find your next favourite band.

What's your top song right now?

That's a tough choice, as I could have picked anything from the Clock Opera, Alt-J, or Breton albums, as 2012 has been a great year for albums so far, but if we had to pick just one tune then you could do worse than trying this new artist from Denmark, Rangleklods, with his track Young & Dumb

What's your favourite music blog aside from your own?

There are loads that we read all the time. For opinions and a real voice, try Breaking More Waves, the Needle Drop, or My Band's Better Than Your Band. For up to date and consistently great emerging music, try Abeano or Crack in the Road, or for blogs with particularly similar tastes to the Recommender's, try Pretty Much Amazing or Disco Naivete. All of these are established and well-respected blogs who operate at the cutting edge of new music.
