Blocked Glasgow city centre drains start 'sinking into ground' causing 'ponds'

Drains in Glasgow's city centre have become so blocked they are 'sinking' into the ground and turning into 'ponds' when it rains, residents have said.

Chair of the Garnethill Neighbourhood Watch Bill Beckett told Glasgow Live that he has been reporting the blocked drains in the Sauchiehall street and Garnethill area for the last three years.

He said drains are full of mud, and litter. When it rains, water pools around the drains and some have started sinking into the tarmac.

Pictures show drains fully and partially blocked with mud and litter and the pavements around some of the roads puckering, crumbling and breaking.

Some of the drains have plants growing from the mud beneath the grills.

Bill says that some residents worry that the drains will collapse, leading gaping holes in the roads and pavements that are incredibly busy.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman says that there is a 'rolling programme of gully clearing' of the drains in place which focuses on locations prone to flooding.

He added these locations are cleared three times a year, and in the city centre, they are cleaned 'at least once a year'.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “We have a rolling programme of gully clearing of all the drains around the city with a focus on arterial routes, known flooding locations and gullies that are known to fill-up quickly.

"Known flooding locations will be cleared three times a year with gullies on arterial routes and in the city centre cleared at least once a year with neighbourhood areas have gullies cleared once every two years.

"The city centre was targeted over the course of last summer, but we do respond to localised issues, depending on the circumstances.”
