Blockbuster surge in dengue cases in Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD: Various hospitals in the city have recorded a total of 2,942 cases of dengue in the January to November 27 period this year.

The number represents a 581% jump from 432 cases registered in the whole of 2020 in the city.

This month’s dengue cases stood at 406 which is only 26 cases fewer than the entire year’s number of last year.

City hospitals registered 1,584 chikungunya cases in the same period, up 71.61% from 923 cases in the whole of last year.

The AMC health department data shows malaria cases in the city in the Jan-Nov 27 period at 958, up 55% from 618 in the whole of last year.

City hospitals in the same period recorded 111 cases of falciparum, up 73.43% from 64 cases registered last year.

Waterborne diseases also have registered a rise in this period, AMC figures reveal. As many as 1,949 cases of typhoid were registered in the Jan-Nov 27 period against 1,338 cases in the whole of 2020. Hospitals registered 3,444 diarrhoea cases in the Jan-Nov period this year against 2,072 cases in 2020.

In all, 64 cases of cholera have been registered so far this year. No cholera case was registered last year.
