Bloc Party’s lead singer Kele Okereke and his old school mate, lead guitarist Russell Lissack have been making music together since 1999. They were joined by bassist Gordon Moakes and drummer Matt Tong (later replaced by Justin Harris and Louise Bartle respectively) and named themselves Bloc Party in 2003. Two years later, their debut album Silent Alarm was released to critical acclaim.
For the next decade, the band has taken their alternate dance and Brit pop to stages around the globe and released five records. Their 2016 album Hymns continues the band’s electronic sound, with lyrics harking back to Okereke’s first musical experience of singing hymns at school.
