Blind man shopping in Iceland attacked from behind by cowardly thug

A blind man in his 60s was attacked from behind and then kicked on the floor as he left Iceland supermarket.

The violence attack happened at around midday, yesterday, at the store in Formby Village after the victim had been shopping for provisions.

Police are investigating the assault and it is understood the attacker managed to leave the scene and no arrests have been made.

The victim's daughter said: "A man who was described as tall and well-built came up behind my dad as he was leaving Iceland, punched him in his lower back, when my dad fell, the man repeatedly kicked him on the floor.

"Dad was taken to Southport Accident and Emergency Department.

"He is ok, thankfully, but in pain.

"My dad is registered blind, struggled a lot since losing my mum.

"This is a really s*** thing to do, and a cowardly thing to do to a blind man from behind his back.

"I hope if anyone knows who the attacker was they come forward.

"It has been reported and [they] are waiting on CCTV."

His daughter added: "He is still shook up.

"I am glad he has a positive mindset and will go out today."

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "We received a report at 9.15pm last night, Wednesday 24th February, that a man in his 60s had been shopping in Iceland in Formby Village earlier that day when he got into an altercation with another man.

"As he left the store he was reported to have been assaulted on Chapel Lane and was struck to the back, causing him to fall over and was then kicked.
