Bleacher Report names Dolphins’ most intriguing project player in 2019

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski penned an article yesterday outlining each NFL franchise’s most intriguing project player entering 2019. For some teams, it was a player who has been trapped behind other talent for the past few years — a player ready to make the jump to a starter role. Other teams saw career underachievers in new locations make the list — former Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White (a former top-10 pick) got the designation in his first season in Arizona.

The Miami Dolphins?

Undrafted rookie wide receiver Preston Williams got the call. An undrafted free agent out of Tennessee and Colorado State, Williams’ path to the NFL hasn’t been the smoothest. Here’s some of what Sobleski had to say about Williams and why he’s such an intriguing player for the Dolphins.

“Preston Williams displayed first-round talent during his final collegiate season yet went undrafted due to a sordid history that included a transfer and guilty plea to an assault charge involving his then-girlfriend.

Williams finished fourth overall among FBS targets last season with 1,345 receiving yards, and the Dolphins have already seen flashes of his massive potential.” – Brent Sobleski

The claim of first-round talent at Colorado State is disputable, given how raw Williams was with his route running, particularly on his breaks at the top of his stem. Add in some frustrating drops and Williams certainly has his fair share of questions. But Sobleski’s greater point is that Williams is physically gifted and that his traits will make for an intriguing storyline this August.

And he’s not wrong. Dolphins fans would be wise to proceed with caution, but Williams is budding with potential if this Dolphins coaching staff can keep him disciplined.
