Blaze destroys abandoned house in inner-city Brisbane

Authorities said the house was unoccupied.

An abandoned home has been gutted by fire in the inner-city Brisbane suburb of Spring Hill.

Five fire trucks and crews were at the scene of the blaze which started on St Paul's Terrace just before 7:30am.

Firefighters trying to search the building had to abandon their efforts because the house became structurally unsafe.

However, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman Mark Kahler said the home was unoccupied.

"The house is still standing but the interior of the home and the structure is severely damaged," he said.

It is not known what caused the fire but it generated considerable smoke over the city.
