Blaze breaks out during funeral at Glasgow crematorium as probe launched

An investigation has been launched after a fire broke out at a crematorium during a funeral.

Three fire crews were called to a blaze in the basement of Linn Crematorium in Glasgow’s Castlemilk area and two members of staff were treated by paramedics following the incident last month.

It’s understood the fire broke out after the casket had been lowered and away from the view of mourners.

Glasgow City Council, which operates the site, said a probe had been launched into the circumstances surrounding the fire, which saw funeral services diverted to another crematorium almost 10 miles away while emergency crews worked at the scene.

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “The fire service was called to deal with an incident at Linn Crematorium and a fire was extinguished.

"A full investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.”

Two services due to take place that afternoon had to be held at Daldowie Crematorium in Uddingston,
Lanarkshire. Linn Crematorium was able to reopen as normal the following day.

It’s understood the two members of staff who were treated on scene did not require hospital treatment.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were alerted at 12.32pm on Wednesday, June 23, to reports of a building on fire at Lainshaw Drive, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting the basement area of a building. Two casualties were in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”
