Blaydon Cricket Club in bid to upgrade training facilities

A Gateshead cricket club is set to have good innings when it upgrades its training facilities but it needs to make sure the council is bowled over by the plans first.

Blaydon Cricket Club has applied to the authority for permission to improve its outdoor nets.

In a letter to the council, the club says the existing nets have been deemed 'unsafe' and have not been used for three years and it wants to replace them with a new two-lane outdoor practice facility.

The letter said: "The facility itself will feature two different playing surfaces to meet the needs of all player abilities and will have an enclosed netting design needed for a safe and secure training environment."

The new nets would be located at the north end of the club grounds.

The statement added: "The proposed site is not currently used for anything and does not appear to have any detrimental impact on the conservation area."

Gateshead Council will decide whether to grant planning permission for the nets by 4 June.
