Blantyre Vics make junior football history

Blantyre Vics made junior football history on Monday night when they were presented with the West League Championship trophy from last season – to keep.

Vics were crowned winners alongside Darvel after the season was halted due to the coronavirus outbreak, with each side given a trophy.

Boss John Gibson was delighted with the gesture, and said it wasn’t just for the players.

“It was good for the players to get the recognition and it was good for the committee to get it as well, people who work hard behind the scenes," he said.

“It’s not just the players, it’s for the club and some of the supporters as well, who have actually done things around the club and put their own money in to support us as well, we can’t forget about these people.

“I was delighted that they got the trophy and the players got their medals.

“It was deserved; in the end we played 18 or 19 games and we had won 15 in a row. I think we both deserved the title.

Manager John Gibson joined the squad for a celebration with the trophy (Blake Welsh)

"They made two trophies and each team got one to keep, obviously with it being the last season in the Championship.”

“It’s a bit of history, and to have won the league going into the new set-up, that's pretty good for the club."
