Blantyre Soccer Academy hosting Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival

Blantyre Soccer Academy will host their fifth annual Reamonn Gormley Memorial Sportsman Dinner later this month.

They will hold the event in Carrigan’s, 100 Broompark Road, Blantyre, on Friday, May 24, at 7pm.

The evening will include a three-course dinner with entertainment from popular guest speakers Tam Cowan and Alan Rough.

Tickets are priced at £35 per person and tables can seat up to 10, although tickets can be purchased individually.

All proceeds from the dinner will be donated to the Good Child Foundation – the charity that Reamonn worked with while on a gap year in Thailand before he was murdered.

Blantyre Soccer Academy chairman Jimmy Whelan told the Advertiser this week: “The dinner event, which is now remarkably in its fifth year, precedes our eighth year running the Reamonn Gormley Memorial Soccer Festival, which will this year take place from Friday, May 31, when we have the sponsored walk, followed by the football festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2.

“This festival has grown considerably in size since its first year, with over 1600 children attending last year.

“This year’s event is expected to be just as popular, if not more, and we are delighted to start proceedings with a sportsman’s dinner at the end of May in memory of Reamonn.

“Tickets have been selling fast and we’re all thoroughly looking forward to raising more funds for the Good Child Foundation, a charity for children with Down’s syndrome and a charity that was very close to Reamonn’s heart.”

Popular Reamonn was just 19 when he was murdered in an attempted street robbery while walking home from the Parkville Hotel, Blantyre, on February 1, 2011.
