Blantyre schoolgirl spends her savings on purchasing much-needed items for the homeless

A kind-hearted Blantyre schoolgirl has spent her savings on purchasing much-needed items for the homeless.

Ellie Devlin, of Larkfield Drive, had been saving up her birthday and pocket money as she wanted to buy herself a top-of-the-range pair of earpods.

Instead, she decided to spend her savings on buying items for people living on the streets of Glasgow.

Putting her own want aside, the 12-year-old Calderside Academy pupil took to the shops and purchased a host of wooly hats, scarves, gloves, socks, wipes, hankies, water, snacks and sweets which she then packed into individual bags.

Supervised by a family member, the youngster then went around Glasgow city centre at the weekend, speaking to the homeless and giving them her gifts.

Ellie’s proud gran Catherine Devlin told the Advertiser: “Those who Ellie gifted her bags too were so grateful, even reducing one homeless woman to tears.

“Ellie didn’t expect any recognition or credit for doing this, but her mum Margaret and I think she is an amazing, caring little person that we are obviously so proud of.

“She is an absolute star!”

Ellie’s mum Margaret Barclay added: “I am really proud of my girl for sacrificing something she wanted so badly to do what she did for others.

“She has a heart of gold and has always been such a considerate an helpful girl, even with her little brother Riley.

“Ellie is very special to me and indeed all of the family, and the best of it is she doesn’t look for or expect any praise or a fuss, to her it’s just a normal gesture and she will actually be embarrassed at all the attention she is getting.

“But we are all so proud.”
